Petal Picking: I love my job, not so much, I love my job, not so much...

This blog is meant to be an account of the daily events of my college internship and a floriculture educational tool. And as much as I want this to focus on the floral industry and the advantages of real world work experience that are offered through participating in an internship, I have a feeling it might become a slightly comical view into my personal life as a tree huggin', plant lovin', flower pickin', dirt diggin' horticulturist... I'll let you be the judge.

Week of March28th - Dizzy Daisy

If this daisy thought last week was insane, she is sorely mistaken!
Three HUGE things happened this week.
1. Vanguard Show House Preparation
2. Siena Women's Expo
3. OPENHOUSE

Lets start with the Vanguard showhouse...
There is a construction/contraction company in the capital district area that restores a beautiful multi-million dollar home each spring.  Last years was in Loudonville, this year's is in Colonie.  I will get a photo of the outside of it when I go back to clean the construction dust off of everything later this week.  But for now you will have to be satisfied with interior photos of the room that Experience's interior decor team was in charge of.  Any local interior designer who is interested contacts Vanguard and is assigned a room to decorate.  This year's home wanted everything to be period dated, circa 1880's.  Take a peek....

This was an Italian carpenter doing some woodworking, he was the sweetest little thing, he reminded me of a canoli, ha, I never did catch his name, so I shall call him Luigi!

LOOK I fit in the built in bookshelves. Here I am painting the back drop and eating a piece of home made Mississippi Mud made by one of the Vanguard volunteers

Siena Women's Expo - Siena college hosted the first Annual Siena Women's Expo on their campus.  Their state of the art gym held 150 vendors of goods that are directed towards the female consumer... so in essence it was like a huge slumber party with teenage girls.  It was a good time.  As a fellow vendor I got free passes for mani-pedis, hair and make up, clothes and jewelry coupons, free fried dough (hmmmm, yes like the kind at the county fair) as well as a few other things.  We were booth #1, the first booth everyone saw as they entered, and we also decorated the entranceway.

Documentation of open house will have to wait until tomorrow as I am about to konk out on my keyboard... my petal rating will have to wait until then too.  Sweet dreams!

Week of March 21st - Designing Daisy

2 weeks and counting to open house... CRUNCH TIME!!!
This week consisted of many tasks in gearing up...
-Straightening the aisles
-Designing more product
-Cleaning... EVERYTHING!
-And so on.

Here's the proof
Straightening the aisles... with a laurel leaf wreath atop my head!

This week certainly kept me busy and sent me home tired, so a 7 petal week again!

My apologies! Neglectful Daisy says "Hi" again

Ooppsies!  I do believe i have not posted anything in a whole month!  Life sure does take advantage when it can.  My lack of posting is like not fertilizing your garden for an entire season, which = NO GOOD!  So here it is... the entire past month inside Experience and Creative Design, Ltd.

Here are some more displays I worked on or had the pleasure of watching the display be created.  It will give you an idea of what the store front looks like.  We cleared out winter... which meant vacuuming up all the "snow" and in came spring, which meant putting leaves back on the "trees".  All of this was in preparation for the incoming spring season (which I do believe we jinxed, because it is almost May.... and spring has yet to arrive!) and our Spring Open House, a week long event held in the first week in April.

This was on average a 7 petal week.  It was fun to see the store transform and change, but it was sometimes frustrating to finagle piecing the displays together.
