Petal Picking: I love my job, not so much, I love my job, not so much...

This blog is meant to be an account of the daily events of my college internship and a floriculture educational tool. And as much as I want this to focus on the floral industry and the advantages of real world work experience that are offered through participating in an internship, I have a feeling it might become a slightly comical view into my personal life as a tree huggin', plant lovin', flower pickin', dirt diggin' horticulturist... I'll let you be the judge.

Wednesday February 9th - Drooping Daisy

INVENTORY - before we can input all the new items that are coming in off one tractor trailer after another, we must count each little thing we have a price on... and when I mean everything, I'm being serious.  From an entire outdoor patio furniture set to the tiny fake bird eggs (the size of your pinky nail) we use to make fake nests look more realistic in our fake arrangements.  Plus EVERYTHING in between.  Category upon category, item upon item... I am going to dream of skews tonight.

5 petal day - my eyes are bluring from reading hundreds of strands of miniscule numbers

Tuesday February 8th - Ditto Docked Daisy

See below post for what I did today, its a carbon copy.

7 petal day - the glee from being back has yet to go away
Me in my fortress of boxes, in my pricing kingdom

Monday February 7th - Docked Daisy

The store has hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of inventory and I am proud to say that I got to stand within the same 1 square foot tile for eight hours straight and price some of it... I was a docked daisy today, docked at the counter in the receiving portion of the store, as if I had a really strong tap root.  However, from my one square foot of space I learned a little bit about our inventory system: How to input items in the computer, how to price them for our cost, for retail and for wholesale, and how to process and print our own skews.
Being a docked daisy is not as dismal as it sounds though - I am so glad to be back to work, getting things done and having the flow of crispy green again!  Not to mention being back in the company of my bosses and my co-workers...

8 petal day - so happy to be back

Playing catch up from the start line...

So I have some serious catching up to do, I am 3 weeks deep into my internship and have yet to make a post.  That's what happens when I spend all my time formatting and playing with the settings of this blog instead of using it for its purpose.  So here is a whirl wind look at the past three weeks....

First off, the site of my internship is Experience and Creative Design LTD.  It is a good sized, multi-faceted company.  They are most well known for their permanent botanical arrangements and home decor.  But they also offer services in interior design, residential and commercial seasonal and holiday decor through leasing or purchase, fresh flower work for events such as parties and weddings, as well as a retail and wholesale store front that offers the permenant arrangements and home decor along with furniture, artwork, and loose stem permenants and design supplies.
Experience also has a sister company, Table Cloths for Granted, which is a full service table cloth and linen company.  All of these services, expertise and creativity are housed under one roof.  The roof of an old grocery store at 510 Union St. in Schenectady NY (but its far from looking like a grocery store now, you will have the opportunity to see that later).
The men behind this force are David Siders and Rudy Grant, both AIFD.  Each of them has the experience that they offer from years of being in the floral industry.  But to keep things as factual as possible I will be interviewing them and will follow with a profile about each of them.
The team of people at Experience are a wonderful wide range of people from all sorts of backgrounds which makes it fun to be alongside such a diverse group of people.  Here is a quick overview of the staff and their main responsibilities...
Mary - A very maternal and wonderfully creative floral designer
Suzie - Office manager and the "go to" girl
Monique - The interior designer and marketing specialist (who is due to have a little baby boy, Max, at the beginning of April, yea!)
Bill - The man who keeps all the inventory straight (and there's TONS of it) as well as the leasing coordinator
Ron - Our trusty delivery guy who is also in charge of keeping all of the business's rental pieces in order.
Deann - She's the one you go to if you need a table cloth, napkin, chair cover, or tie-back.
Patty - Another lovely linens lady
Cindy - Yet another lovely linens lady
Debbie - One of our store front gals who helps to guide customers to their wants and desires.
Carolyn - Another one of the ladies who will welcome you to the store and ring out your purchases.
Kyle - The newest addition to our counter girls.
Stephanie - My partner in floral crime as we were both hired at the same time to be melded into the designers that David wants for Experience.
Julius - He keeps our work place and sparkling and in order and keeps a smile on all our faces.
Gary - Suzie's dad and Rudy's brother, an amazing handyman and the grandpa-esque charater that makes you wish you could adopt him into your own family.
Carl - Gary's cohort when it comes to keeping the place in tip top running shape, and a comedian as well, always a wise crack in store.

The next 3 weeks worth of posts will say that they were posted today, but I will keep them in chronological order from Monday Feb. 7th until now.
